About the event

Picture
This free event is open to local high school students who have dreams of one day becoming a teacher and their teacher chaperones. The day will consist of an opening keynote by the 2020-21 PA Teacher of the Year and will include three concurrent breakout sessions on topics about creative teaching and learning that will inspire our future teachers to enter the "profession that creates all other professions."

The event will also help students meet the College and Career Measures of Future Ready PA.

As per PDE:
For the 2018-19 school year and beyond, school entities must demonstrate that students have met the full continuum of career readiness expectations as defined for each grade span. Specifically, evidence shall be collected in a manner that validates that all four strands of the Career Education and Work standards have been meaningfully addressed. Grade span requirements are as follows:
  • By the end of grade 11, the student has produced eight additional pieces of evidence beyond the K-5 and 6-8 grade bands of evidence. At least two of these pieces of evidence must demonstrate implementation of the student’s individualized career plan.

All students will receive a certificate documenting the CEW (Career Education and Work) standards they attained during the conference.

Lunch and raffle prizes are included.  Teacher/Counselor chaperones attending the event will receive 4.5 hours of Act 48 credit.

Breakout Session DESCRIPTIONS

Innovative Strategies to Cultivate Creativity and Literacy
Educators consistently explore new pathways to engage students when teaching. Throughout the last 15 months, innovation has undergone continued transformation as technology continues to become more accessible to teachers and learners.  Within this session, let’s examine methods that we can use to enhance both student creativity as well as their literacy skills as we put students in positions to collaborate, innovate, and personalize their experience as young learners.  From creating graphic novels, to leveraging music, to creating animations and documentaries we will discuss how everyone can create while still cultivating literacy skills.
Presenter: Mr. Joe Welch, Keynote Presenter

Teaching Beyond the Classroom
People tend to automatically assume that all people with an education degree want to teach in a formal classroom setting. Classroom teaching is a fantastic route but try not to overlook the other viable and fulfilling career paths that you can take when you have an education degree. In this session, we will spend some time considering many of these career possibilities and opportunities after graduation, including graduate school and informal teaching, that are available to those who study education in college.
Presenters: Sarah O'Callaghan & Ryan McElhinney

Online Learning Becomes Real with Telepresence Robots
Have you ever had a student that was absent for an extended time and upon return they struggled catching up? Let that be a thing of the past with telepresence. This education tool is no longer a thing of science fiction. Students can virtually attend class via robots. Learn how to control and drive these robots of the future today!
Presenter: Gabrielle Lucas

Responsible Citizens for a Digital Era: Promoting Digital Citizenship in Your Future Classroom
Smart phones, social media, and other technologies are ever-present in our everyday lives. Now, more than ever, teachers must work to promote safe and healthy "digital practices" among their students. In this interactive session, you will explore the various elements of digital citizenship, identify strategies for fostering students' digital well-being, and reflect upon your own technology use. By the end of the day, you will possess a variety of digital citizenship resources for use in your future classroom!
Presenter: Makayla McMullen

Nature in the Informal Classroom
This session will focus on the aspect of teaching students about nature in an informal classroom. The presenters will discuss programs conducted at the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve (WPNR) and how you can engage students to learn about science and nature, as well as the benefits of being able to teach nature and science in a nature based format. A meet and greet/turtle circle with WPNR's yellow spotted salamanders, Skipper and Waldo, and Jasper and Jasmine, the eastern box turtles will also occur. Through the meet and greet/turtle circle, the presenters will demonstrate how students can become engaged and active in an informal classroom while learning about science and nature.
Presenters: Alec Barlock and Lucy Kedzierski

Classroom Community: Building Positive Student-Teacher and Peer-Peer Relationships
A great learning experience starts with positive relationships between the teacher and students as well as between the students themselves. A safe nurturing and respectful environment can only be created if everyone in the class has the same goal. Let’s discuss how we can together create a positive classroom environment and get everyone involved! Can you brainstorm ways we can all achieve the goal of a respectful and positive classroom environment?
Presenter: Emily Giallonardo

Technology in Teaching: Leading Your Future Learners
Technology is continuously changing how we reach, teach, and interact with learners not only on a daily basis, but now with 24/7 access to both learners and educators. Technology links within itself and creates a virtual environment that provides learners and teachers alike with resources, data, and a fresh new way to present learning and ideas. In this session you will be challenged to think outside the box and put some of the latest and greatest tech tools to use.
Presenter: Molly Massimo
The College Application Process
The college application process can be confusing. Join our admissions staff as they walk you through what you will need as you begin to put together your application and what to expect during the admissions process.
Presenters: Admissions Office Staff

Tour the Campus Education Spaces at Saint Vincent College
During this session, you will take a short guided tour of campus to see some of the innovative spaces that exist on college campuses, particularly those  (i.e., maker space, multimedia labs, art  gallery, Fred Rogers spaces, labs) that help future teachers expand their repertoire of skills. This session is limited to 10 people.
Presenter: Education Students

How to be an Effective Teacher During the Covid-19 Pandemic, as a Student Teacher.
You pass your Gen-Eds, you pass your content area classes, you pass your upper-level class, and you pass your method classes. You are ready to complete your student teaching experience and graduate. Just one small obstacle, a once in a century virus is spreading across the world.  Teachers all across the United States are learning how to teach remotely. Some schools are in a hybrid system, and some are fully remote. Nothing could have prepared me for the challenge of student teaching during the Covid-19 pandemic. In this session, I will tell the story of my experience of student teaching. How I taught during a hybrid class, a full remote class, and an all in person class. What types of lessons, applications, and assessments worked, and those that did not work. Activities during this session will include group discussions and group situations.
Presenter: Tyler Kocsis

Club Carousel
A part of expanding your knowledge of the education field is by connecting with other like minded people. Education clubs can help you do just that. They also can offer you experiences and learning opportunities that you will not get inside the classroom. These experiences will look great on your resume and will directly impact your teaching pedagogy. In this session, you get to interact with current Saint Vincent College students and learn about how education clubs can help to build upon the knowledge and skills you need to be an effective teacher.
Presenters: Education Students

Learning To Play… The Right Way
Have you ever thought that essentially reading a script to students every was boring? Well it certainly can be, especially for our young children. Teaching should be focused on how we can use standards and curriculum goals to enhance the way students learn. This session focuses on the importance of incorporating play within daily lessons. This is something that not only encourages students to want to learn, but helps them use their creativity and problem-solving skills. During this presentation you will be taken through a unique play-based lesson that will encourage you to use your problem-solving skills and imagination to complete the task at hand, while enacting the possibilities of play within the classroom.
Presenters: Becca Tosoni and Brie Prodanovich

Encouraging Students To Do Their B.E.S.T.: Special Education
The Bearcat B.E.S.T. (Building Excellence through Skills Training) Program is an inclusive college-campus based transition to adulthood program for students aged 18-21 who have intellectual or developmental disabilities or autism. The program focuses on building skills in the areas of academics, vocational training, social skills training including self-advocacy skills, and independent living skills. The teachers of the program are highly qualified special education teachers who utilize research-based teaching strategies, high expectations, and real-world experiences to cultivate statistically significant gains in their students. Come learn about Bearcat B.E.S.T. and the role of a Special Education teacher!
Presenters: Alaina Robbins, Leann Downs, and Taylor Allison

Teaching Students to Hold Their Own: Social Emotional Learning and its Impact on Education
In the field of Education you will see many phrases, terms, and acronyms tossed around when discussing techniques and theories regarding teaching and maximizing a student’s ability to learn, and the wide berth of such terms may seem daunting or nonsensical to a person just dipping their toes into the subject. This presentation will introduce to you “Social Emotional Learning” (SEL), one such topic you will hear and read about as future educators. You will learn what the core aspects of SEL are, why it matters in the classroom, and brainstorm how you can implement it into your own future classrooms one day!
Presenters: Levi Baum and Taylor Berardi
