About the event
This free event is open to local high school students who have dreams of one day becoming a teacher and their teacher chaperones. The day will consist of an opening keynote by the 2022 PA Teacher of the Year and will include three concurrent breakout sessions on topics about creative teaching and learning that will inspire our future teachers to enter the "profession that creates all other professions."
The event will also help students meet the College and Career Measures of Future Ready PA. All students will receive a certificate documenting the CEW (Career Education and Work) standards they attained during the conference.
Lunch and raffle prizes are included. Teacher/Counselor chaperones attending the event will receive 4.5 hours of Act 48 credit.

Keynote Speaker: MrS. ELIZABETH RAFF, 2022 PA Teacher of the Year
Elizabeth Raff is a passionate and enthusiastic educator who sparks excitement and creativity in her classroom. She propels students to be lifelong learners by using unique classroom engagement strategies. Most recently, Elizabeth was named the 2022 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year. In her role, she travels the state, meets and collaborates with other educators, and participates in the 2023 national teacher of the year cohort. As part of her Teacher of the Year duties, she currently serves as the Elementary Learning Facilitator in the Penn Manor School District. She received her Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction from Penn State University and currently resides in Lancaster, PA with her husband and two children.

AI (Artificial Intelligence) in Education
Chat GPT is a common form of AI that most people have heard of and probably use. However, there are so many other AI tools that have educational applications. Learn ways we can use these tools effectively with our students and discover some potential pitfalls AI can cause. Presenter: Dr. Aaron Sams, Assistant Professor, SVC Becoming a Teacher: The Field That Creates All Other Professions Learn all you need to know about the teaching field, including the job and salary outlook, certification options, requirements for certification, and teacher dispositions. Presenter: Dr. Tracy McNelly, Associate Professor, SVC Careers at Intermediate Units Description: Learn about the extensive career opportunities that are available in Intermediate Units across Pennsylvania. Join Dr. Jason Conway, Executive Director, of the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit as he shares how Intermediate Units provide support to schools and the community and how you can become a part of a rewarding organization that makes a true difference in the lives of youth. Presenter: Dr. Jason Conway, Executive Director, Westmoreland Intermediate Unit Encouraging Students To Do Their B.E.S.T.: Special Education The Bearcat B.E.S.T. (Building Excellence through Skills Training) Program is an inclusive college-campus based transition to adulthood program for students aged 18-21 who have intellectual or developmental disabilities or autism. The program focuses on building skills in the areas of academics, vocational training, social skills training including self-advocacy skills, and independent living skills. The teachers of the program are highly qualified special education teachers who utilize research-based teaching strategies, high expectations, and real-world experiences to cultivate statistically significant gains in their students. Come learn about Bearcat B.E.S.T. and the role of a Special Education teacher! Presenters: Ali Cox and Maverick Baer Helping the Helpers: The Fred Rogers Institute and Advancing the Legacy of Fred Rogers The Fred Rogers Institute is an organization on the campus of Saint Vincent College that advances the legacy of Fred Rogers by investing in the strengths of families and caring adults to support the healthy development of children. We work with educators around the world by building communities of practice, offering professional learning experiences, and creating resources to support mental health and wellbeing of children and their caregivers. In this session, we will describe the Fred Rogers Institute initiatives and provide an overview of the numerous opportunities we have for students to learn from educators in the field, dig into the Fred Rogers Archive, and contribute to projects that directly serve children’s helpers. Presenter: Sarah Goehring and Morgan Constantino LIVE it, LOVE it, LEARN it at Centers This session will focus on how to successfully conduct the use of Literacy Learning Centers in your future classroom. Learners Centers in the classroom promote independence and responsibility. No matter what ages the students are, it is essential for them to learn and adapt to these skills needed to be successful. Learning Centers are a great way to promote students to demonstrate what they are capable of by correctly rotating, completing work, practicing their literacy skills, having all materials, and staying on task. Makerspaces in the Learning Environment
Makerspaces are all the rage in schools today. Perhaps your school has a makerspace or a media center with maker tools. Learn how you can use these spaces in your classroom and come tinker with some awesome maker stuff. Presenter: Dr. Aaron Sams, Assistant Professor, SVC Nature in the Informal Classroom For this session, you will take the short journey by foot to the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve barn, which is a short walk from the Fred Rogers Institute. This session will focus on the aspect of teaching students about nature in an informal classroom. You will get to interact with several hands-on nature learning stations. The presenters will also discuss programs conducted at the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve (WPNR) and how you can engage students to learn about science and nature. Presenters: Angela Belli, Executive Director of WPNA, and Allison Sellitto, Environmental Education Coordinator Set the Stage to Engage Looking for ways to engage your students and level up instruction in your future classrooms? Join Elizabeth as she shares strategies that can build excitement, enthusiasm, and cognitive sweat in each student. This session will feature several current education students who will talk about coursework, working in the field in schools, student teaching, and much, much more. Presenters: SVC Education Students Technology as an Effective Tool in the Classroom Technology is a great way for teachers to gain the attention of their students in the classroom. Technology that is used in a classroom should be reinforcing a lesson, it should not just be the lesson. It can be used before, during, or after the lesson to get the students thinking about the main points of the lesson or reinforcing the lesson that was taught. Many teachers know how to use technology, but do they all know how to use it effectively? In this session we will be discussing how to use different technology in your classroom to make it an effective tool for you. Join our admissions staff as they walk you through what you will need as you begin to put together your application and what to expect during the admissions process. Presenters: Admissions Office Staff The Games Teachers Play Using games and gamification strategies in the classroom aren't used just to make the classroom a fun place to learn for students. Educational research supports the use of educational games and gamification strategies to motivate students and cultivate critical thinking skills.
