Breakout Sessions
What to Expect When You're Becoming a Teacher
You graduate from college. You complete a successful student teaching experience, receive a diploma, and proudly display your teaching certificate. You are ready to dive in and teach young minds. What should you expect to happen next? Everyone has an idea of what "next" should look like. Everyone has expectations that everything should fall neatly into place. However, is that really what will happen? How do you have to prepare for the next step in your career? By the end of this session, you will have an idea of how to prepare yourself for the "next" and what to expect when you are becoming a teacher. Presenter: Allison Conrad Habits of Highly Effective Teachers What are the qualities of an excellent teacher? What do I need to do to ensure that I adhere to these qualities in my own teaching someday? Do I really have what it takes to be a successful teacher? If you’ve ever asked yourself these key questions then you’re in the right session! In this interactive and engaging session, you will have the opportunity to dive into Dr. Stephen Covey’s book entitled: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teachers to discover what it is exactly that makes effective teachers tick. You will work together to explore the 7 Habits as well as develop your own unique teacher mission statements for use in their future classrooms. *Note~ Please make sure you bring a laptop or device with you to this session so we can make our teacher mission statements even more exciting! Presenter: Marissa Pecora Making Your Future Classroom STEAMy Have you heard about STEAM but have no clue what it is? Or maybe you have heard of it, but you want to teach a subject that might not be inherently “STEAMy.” What even is STEAM and why is it important? In this breakout session, you will explore what STEAM is really about, create ways to incorporate it into your future classrooms, and brainstorm plans to get students to think “outside-the-box,” all while working in your beloved subject area! Spoiler Alert: STEAM is not - Every student working with robots or equations. STEAM is - Fostering independent and creative thinking skills that will continue to support students throughout the entirety of any education or career. Presenter: Hannah Earhart Using STEM to Make Science and Math Fun for All What is STEM, and how can teachers use it in the classroom to make teaching science and math more fun and engaging for students (and themselves!) ? This session will explore what STEM is, why it is advantageous to use STEM-related activities when teaching, and ways to incorporate STEM into classes to make fun and accessible activities for students. Participants will have a chance to get hands-on, developing and practicing STEM-related activities together. Presenter: John Howard Cultivating Creativity in Your Future Classroom When you think of a typical classroom you might think of the words, desk, pencil, chalkboard, and homework. Yet, many do not realize the changes that have been taking place to create a classroom of insight and creativity. Classwork and classroom layouts are changing to enhance academics and explore the creativity, engagement, and thoughts of students. Throughout this breakout session we will be exploring ways to cultivate creativity in the classroom and to take the “boring” out of learning! Presenter: Courtney Watt Play Based Learning Makes Learning Fun Instead of sitting at desks with a pencil and paper, students are moving around the classroom, laughing, and learning through play. Yes, the students are playing. When learning through play, students explore their creativity and are engaged in activities that are exciting. Play Based Learning is the new kind of “fun” in a classroom. If you want to have fun, then you want to know more about Play Based Learning. Presenter: Alyson Regula Breaking the Ice: Building Relationships with Your Future Students Let’s “toast” to the profession of education where we build relationships and provide a positive, safe environment for all individuals. Every individual learns differently; therefore how can we individualize and provide a positive learning environment for all students? Let’s take a look at how we can navigate the ever-growing field of education, together! Presenter: Mariah Ferraco |
Movement in the Classroom: How Brain Breaks Will Help Your Future Students Succeed
Have you ever squirmed at the thought of sitting at an uncomfortable wooden desk for the entirety of a long, drawn out lecture? If so, “Movement in the Classroom” is for you! In this interactive session, you will explore the research-based benefits of incorporating “brain breaks” into your daily teaching routine. As a participant, you will have the opportunity to try out many different brain breaks, ranging from fun physical challenges to relaxing Play-doh artwork. By the end of this session, you will understand new ways to get your future students moving and engaged! Presenter: Makayla McMullen Managing a Successful Classroom with Positive Reinforcement The vast world of education is much more than simply teaching the students. It also involves grading papers, talking to parents, and most importantly, managing classroom behavior and the classroom environment, which can be one of the hardest, yet rewarding aspects of teaching. From managing the procedures to enforcing positive student interactions, the most important lesson teachers can teach is how to properly behave in a school environment. Presenter: Douglas (DJ) Hough Including All Types of Learners in Your Future Classroom Have you ever wondered how you will reach all of the students in your classroom? Although it is not easy, this session will give you some ideas of how to better manage the various needs you will encounter in the classroom. Along with inclusion, we will also discuss special education, and some programs that Saint Vincent College has to offer in regards to any interest you may have in the field of special education. Remember: "No one is you and that is your power"! Presenter: Abbey Conrad Breakout of This! How to Use Escape Rooms in Your Future Classroom In typical Escape Rooms, participants must find clues and unlock information in order to escape a provided situation. As this type of activity becomes increasingly popular for America’s youth, teachers have begun using the same type of activity to get students engaged in various lessons. Although some companies, such as Breakout EDU and The Escape Classroom, have premade templates and materials for teachers to use, many teachers choose to make and use their own materials. Teachers can use lockboxes, secret codes, puzzles, black light pens, and so many other tools to enhance the activity. Escape Rooms are great ways to engage your students through encouraging problem solving and cooperation! Presenter: Marissa Falkosky Online Learning Becomes Real with Telepresence Robots Have you ever had a student that was absent for an extended time and upon return they struggled catching up? Let that be a thing of the past with telepresence. This education tool is no longer a thing of science fiction. Students can virtually attend class via robots. Learn how to control and drive these robots of the future today! Presenter: Elisabeth Keener How Technology Can Transform Learning in Your Future Classroom Technology is transforming the way we teach, learn, interact, and is becoming a more powerful resource in education. Sometimes people say technology can be a distraction, but there are many types of technology that are useful and help students better understand what they are learning without being distraction. With technology evolving, this session will give you some ideas of what technologies, mobile applications, and other resources can help students learn. This session as well will give you tips on how to limit distractions in and outside the classroom. Presenter: Cassandra Smith Gamification Enhances the Learning Experience for Students Why does 45 minutes of math class feel like an eternity but 45 minutes on any XBOX, mobile app, or classic board game feel like a blur? What is it about video games and other standard games that keep everyone coming back for more? We will investigate these driving motivations that game companies have spent billions of dollars investigating and searching for answers to and will discuss how they can be implemented into the classroom. Yes, you read that correctly. Gamification is a new buzz-word in the field of education that may have the perfect solution to make the classroom learning experience feel like a game and have students racing into the classroom rather than racing to get out. Does it sound too good to be true? I guess you will have to attend to see and hear for yourself to prove that we can in fact put FUN and SCHOOL in the same sentence! Presenter: Joshua Suszek |
