Tell us a bit about your job and what you like best. I absolutely love my middle school ELA teaching job at Bermudian Springs, a small rural school district near Gettysburg, PA. I teach 8th graders about the wonderful world of Language Arts. Each of my 4 classes consist of students with a wide range of reading levels, so I am always thinking of ways to modify and differentiate my instruction to accommodate all learners. My favorite part of teaching is forming relationships with my students. I have the unique opportunity to form relationships with students from many different backgrounds, including Hispanic students who have many families and relatives who live in Mexico. Many of these students' parents are involved in the fruit harvesting industry in the apple and peach orchards. I enjoy forming relationships with these students and hearing their stories and perspectives through class discussions. The young people are the future of our world, and it is an honor to teach and learn from them.
What was your best memory of SVC? My best memory of SVC was the community of people at the school. The overall environment of the school was a positive learning environment where students and faculty not only valued academia but also valued people for who they are. I also cherish the memories of running cross country and track at SVC as well as SVC wraps every holiday season.
What advice do you have for education student pursing a degree/certification? Never forget the words of Boniface Wimmer: "Forward, always forward." Education is a tough major and career, but the rewards of working with young people outweigh the demands of the job. There are going to be exhausting days and weeks, but remember that it only takes one influential adult to change a young person's life. Also, never give up on applying for and interviewing for your dream job. This process can be demanding and exhausting, but it pays off to keep at it and improving.
