MATT RUSSO MEMORIAL AWARD 2021 AWARDED TO MArgaret loughran
We are pleased to present the 2021 Matt Russo Memorial Award to Margaret Loughran.
The Matt Russo Memorial Award is given in honor & remembrance of Matt Russo, a student @saintvincentcollege , working towards his bachelor’s degree in Prek-4 education. He was in his junior year when he passed and was a kind and gentle soul, and a friend to all. He was a young man that everyone claimed as a friend and had a leadership side that allowed him to pursue and become a member of the student government. He embraced everything about being a student at Saint Vincent and was proud to be a Bearcat!
This award and monetary gift are given to a junior, Pre K-4 major that shares the qualities that Matt exuded.
This award has been given to Emily Zeh (2013), Genie Fratto (2014), Luke Daghir (2015), Hannah Truong (2016), Alaina D’Aloisa (2017), Douglas (D.J.) Hough (2018), Dylan Paduano (2019), and Jenny Singer (2020). These former students all shared the same redeeming qualities that Matt shared with the world.
This year, the Matt Russo Memorial Award has been awarded to Margaret Loughran. Historically, the award is presented to the recipient by the previous year’s winner at the annual Education Department Senior Send Off Picnic. This year’s picnic has sadly been cancelled due to the restrictions brought on by the pandemic.
Margaret is a proud member of the Early Childhood Education Club, Education Club, and Bearcat Buddies. Margaret is a member Alpha Lambda Delta as well as Kappa Delta Pi. Margaret is someone that can be a strong team member or step up and take the lead. She comes alive when working with children. Her creativity and enthusiasm when working with children is contagious. She has no reservations about throwing herself into a song or making funny voices when storytelling. She is a friend to all and is considered a friend by many for her thoughtful and responsible ways. Outside of Saint Vincent, Margaret nannies and tutors for children in the Greensburg area.
We can’t wait to hear about Margaret’s future accomplishments, we suspect they will be many!

Dr. McNelly Publishes work on Media Literacy Education
Dr. Tracy McNelly, Associate Professor in the Education Department, and her co-author, Dr. Jessica Harvey, Associate Professor in the Department of Communication, recently published, “Media Literacy Instruction in Today’s Classrooms: A Study of Teachers’ Knowledge, Confidence, and Integration” published in the Journal of Media Literacy Education.
“Teachers play a critical role in helping to ensure that students leave school with the skills needed to not only be critical consumers of media, but to also be thoughtful and knowledgeable producers of mediated messages. Despite the important role of teachers in media literacy education, we still know very little about teachers’ knowledge of and experiences with media literacy in the classroom. This information is a critical piece in understanding how to best support teachers as they integrate media literacy education within PreK-12 classrooms. The current study seeks to add to the growing body of research in this area by examining secondary teachers’ knowledge of media literacy, confidence incorporating it in classes, and actual integration of media literacy education in courses. Results of a survey of 71 teachers found a relationship between knowledge, confidence, and integration of media literacy. Implications of the study results are discussed.”

Dr. McNelly Publishes Research on Vocabulary Acquisition
Dr. Tracy McNelly, Associate Professor in the Education Department, has published the manuscript, "The effects of student created videos on vocabulary knowledge" in Academic Exchange Quarterly. This quasi-experimental study investigated the effects of student created multimedia videos on vocabulary acquisition, vocabulary longevity, and perceptions about vocabulary learning for middle school students. Findings suggest that both types of technology improve vocabulary learning, although one is not better than the other. On the posttests, the treatment group had higher mean scores and over time lost less vocabulary words than the control group, however, these findings were not significant. However, the use of multimedia video technology can improve students’ motivation for learning vocabulary words.
